Happenings Around the Homestead – Garden Journal

2 Week Old Cucumber Seedlings

It’s been a productive couple of weeks for me around the homestead. I was able to get some seeds started indoors, planned out my outside garden area, cleared out most of my fenced garden and tilled some of my yet-to-be fenced garden area.

I am planning the garden around the Mittleider Method idea so I am having to do some rearranging. The way I had last years garden set up is going to be a little different this year. I have yet write a post on the Mittleider Method. It’s coming soon don’t worry. Until then just follow the link if you would like to learn more.

Here is a very rough, not to scale diagram of my garden area.

Weathers Family Garden Plan for 2011 - Click to see larger

In Garden Area 1 area I will be able to put two 20 foot long 18″ rows. I have a few spots in this area that already have plants so I am not going to put rows in these spots until after I harvest. I am actually thinking of just leaving it with just two long rows and allow for room for some perennial plants. As you can see I have a tree beside this area of my garden. It shades part of this garden area so I am thinking of planting perennials or annuals that tolerate a little shade. Any suggestions? I am also concerned about the two trees beside Garden Area 2.  They are small right now but I am worried they will eventually shade the garden. Well, actually one is a small oak so by the time it’s large enough to shade I will probably be to old to garden. The other is a fast growing Poplar so it will be shading in a couple of years. I have decided just to wait until it causes a problem.

The Garden Area 2 area will allow for more rows than I show. When I start planning what I want to go into the rows I will post a diagram of each of the garden areas with more detail. I have already planted the raspberries (first year from runners) in this area and the Garden 1  area (3rd year). The strawberry plants are also in there 2nd or 3rd year.

The artichokes I have along Garden Area 1 fence line are already existing. I planted those last year and expect them to do really well this year. Yay! We love artichokes :) . I am planning to plant more artichokes this year. I haven’t planted the grapes yet. I do have four grape vine plants. I tried to plant grapes last year but all the plants died. Hopefully they will survive this year.

Well, that’s about it. I would love for you to share your garden plan with us :) .

  • Wow, i might have to look into that method. This is our first year doing a garden in the ground. We’ve only done containers before. We are doing a very lax sq ft garden. Couldn’t afford the cutesie wooden boxes though lol. Due to our available landscape we had to break it up into 4 sections over our land. Our ‘main garden’ has cucumbers, spinach, bush beans & peppers, carrots & onions. Another area for just tomatoes, another area just for pole beans & one area for huckle berries. In pots this year I’ll have tomatoes (eating), Strawberries (somethings already eating them), various herbs & catnip for the kitties. I’ve also started in pots tea but I won’t be able to harvest for at least 3 years. We are in zone 8 so we planted most right in the ground & some were transplants. Good luck with your garden!

    Heather,

You should look into the Mittleider Method now before you learn how to garden the wrong way like I did :) . Thanks for stopping by!

  • Mona,

I will look into it as soon as i can get to the library. I looked a bit up online and it really seems interesting. This is our first year in the ground & i know we have already made tons of mistakes that a pro would never do.

    Heather,

I don’t know if they carry the books at the library. There are a few free chapters they offer on the site. I have the Mittleider Method Course book.
This is our 4th year gardening and every year I learn new things through mistakes mostly ;) . This year I feel much more confident.. but we will see.
