Homemaking Homemades- My To Do List
There have been several homemade projects I have been wanting to try but just haven’t had the time. I think one of my problems is that I don’t know what to start with. So, I decided to make myself a to do list. I have the next three months planned out. If you want to following my progress check out my list in the sidebar to the right.
This is what I have so far….
For January:
- Make Homemade Deodorant
- Make Homemade Hair Conditioner
For February:
- Homemade Toothpaste
- Goat Milk Bar Soap
- Lip Balm
For March:
- Homemade Shampoo
- Homemade Lotion Bars

Mona, I love your list! I found a recipe for Homemade deodorant that I need to make ASAP because I’m almost out of my Tom’s of Maine and I don’t want to buy more – so that is on my January list. I’m also going to try and make some Goat Milk Soap; I’ve been researching molds that I might want to invest in and finally found what I think I’m going to like (I’d love to talk to you more about this sometime). I just ordered two books on making Milk Based Soaps and another on Natural Soups, so I’m hoping to read through the basics this week – another January project, but it might not actually happen until February. I need to order Bees and Seeds this coming month and perhaps a second hive… I can see January getting very full FAST! I’m looking forward to reading what you’re learning and doing!

Amy @ Homestead Revival,
I am going to be trying Passionate Homemakings deodorant recipe first. Have you seen that one? She says it works really well and she has been using it for a few years.
I should talk to you about the soap making because I don’t have any books. I have been doing some research on different recipes. I did get a recipe from Lori but I lost it. I just want to start with a really easy one. I have seen some people use 3 inch pvc pipes. This will probably be the mold I start with since funds are limited.
I am still interested in bees but that will have to wait until next year probably. Can’t wait to hear how that goes for you. I would love to have my own honey and be able to give it out as gifts.

Just trying the homemade deodorant for the first time. I started making homemade cold-process soap last year, and really like it AND it’s fun to make! I have also made lip balms and bath salts and a few different types of homemade laundry soap.
Your homemade shampoo and homemade lotion bars sound intriguing. I am interested to see what you come up with! :>)
I have often made my own yogourt and sourdough, but have never tried kefir.
@Amy: for cold-process soaps ( the ones that use lye to saponify your fats/oils) you can pretty much use anything for a soap mold…..a sturdy cardboard box/wooden box/silicone baking pan/old baking pan/rubbermaid container, etc, etc( just don’t use it for cooking again) lined with freezer paper will do nicely. Once your soap has gone to “trace” stage, pour it into your lined mold; lay a piece of plastic wrap/plastic bag right on top of the soap surface. Wrap in a couple of layers of old towels or an old, thick blanket. Put in a warm place where it won’t be disturbed for about 24 hours.
After 24 hours, unwrap, peel off the plastic and freezer paper and cut into lengths/bars in the size you prefer. The soap at this stage will be like cutting firm cheddar cheese and it’s a VERY enjoyable process! Set the bars on brown paper or wire racks to “cure”, harden, and dry out for at least 3 weeks. Homemade soap is very economical to make: all you need is lye, water, and some kind of oil: lard, shortening, or olive oil will all work, but the soap is nicer if you use a combination of oils. Castor oil ( yes, the kind you can buy in the drug store) is VERY good in small amts to add good lather. Have fun!
